Loxahatchee comes from the Seminole Indian word meaning Turtle River or River of Turtles, and the town’s name is associated with Loxahatchee River, which is nearby. However, the river does not flow through Loxahatchee and is most commonly associated with Jupiter, Florida, located some 20 miles away.
