Hampton was named after Revolutionary War soldier, General Wade Hampton after the railroad was built in its area. Located at the southwestern section of Henry County, Georgia, Hampton is the only major city west of I-75 and is a great place to call home. Its residents enjoy the advantages of small-town ambiance while being comfortably and conveniently situated just a few minutes south of Atlanta.
Hampton is economically viable and the local government puts much effort on bringing new business into the rapidly growing city and also strives to ensure that existing businesses flourish. Among the notable large employers in the area are Southern States, L.L.C. and The Federal Aviation Administration, a major Air Traffic Control Center that covers the southeastern part of the country.
One of Hampton's main attractions is the nearby Atlanta Motor Speedway, whose AMS races attract the most spectators of any sporting event in the state. Rich in history and tradition, Hampton is still able to accommodate growth. One historic site listed on the National Registry of Historic Places is the Hampton Train Depot, which offers unusual ornate brick trimmings from the 1880s. The Jailhouse Brewing Company, an old jail, is now a thriving brewery. Townhouses have sprouted on Cherry Street, while lovely pre- Civil War homes and old oak trees remain standing.
On top of its designation as a "Tree City" and a "Bird Sanctuary City," Hampton also takes pride in being distinguished as a "Playful City." Hampton is the only city in Henry County to attain such recognition and distinction, indicating its dedication to actively participate in innovative programs. Hampton City has several parks equipped with play areas, basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer, baseball, and softball fields. Batting cages and other facilities, are mostly handicapped-accessible. Parks that residents frequent include North Mt. Carmel Park, Hampton City Park, Liberty Square Park, Nash Farm Park and Lovejoy Regional Park.
