Things to Do in Jacksonville
Jacksonville, North Carolina is a great little family town along the coast. Home to one of the largest Marine Bases, Camp Jejune, Jacksonville boasts a young and family-oriented population. In fact, between the high number of young military recruits and the population of families with young children, Jacksonville is the youngest town in America. That means there are always great family activities for everyone like city sponsored cooking classes for people of all ages, Zumba classes, and events like Family Game Night Scavenger Hunts. Plus, if you're working on the base, there are always great activities, concerts, and groups that many residents take advantage of.
The weather is great in Jacksonville, too. It rarely snows and although the summers get pretty toasty, there are a number of excellent beaches within an hour's drive of the city. Fishing and boating are big time activities here during the summer, although kids will probably prefer sandcastle building and splashing in the waves. Some people even try their hand at surfing the waves! The city boasts seventeen miles of greenbelts and several excellent parks like the Croatan National Forest, where you can hike under an impressive canopy, and Wilson Bay, where you can enjoy a picnic and the great playground. There are some great local spots in town like Shoguns Sushi, a favorite, and Marina Cafe, where you can get some great seafood while overlooking the marina. Be sure to take the sunset cruise at least once, to really take in this beautiful coastal area.
Day trips from Jacksonville are plentiful. Head out to Duplin Winery for an afternoon of wine tasting and scenic views.
