For a nice central location full of unique characteristics, you want Manahawkin, New Jersey! This little suburb of Stafford, in Ocean County, is a short drive from three bustling cities: New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Besides, the only land route to the Long Beach Island resort area runs right through this cute little area.
Festivals play an important role in local economy. For one-of-a-kind experiences, every autumn, there are two festivals in the area. The Makers Market, in September, showcases dozens of vendors that work hard to create various products for sale. The market aims to recognize the value of hand-crafted creativity. Then, there’s the Stafford Township Fall Wine Festival. The backdrop for this festival is the beautiful scenery of Lake Manahawkin. It features wine and beer tasting, vendors offering various goods, live music, and lots of tasty tidbits for your dining pleasure. Best of all, designated drivers (and those under 21) receive free admission, a nice reward for keeping other party-goers safe.
In addition to these fun festivals, Manahawkin Lake Park provides fishing, boating, and other outdoor recreation plus regular live music concerts during the summer. There are also numerous other parks throughout the area where you can find baseball and soccer fields, swimming opportunities, bicycle trails, and playgrounds. Many of the area parks offer event venue rentals as well.
Food lovers will find two unique eateries. Mud City Crab House offers outdoor dining and a full range fish market. Old Causeway Steak and Oyster House offers live music every weekend and a unique selection of oysters almost daily. Both venues are owner operated small businesses.
The school system in the area is also unique in that grade school children (K-6th) go to one school district while older students (7th-12th) go to another. Both districts that serve the area have been noted for unique and innovative approaches to education in both regular and special education programs. Both districts provide English as a Second Language (ESL) and special education programs. The high school that serves Manahawkin offers over 200 basic classes for students to choose from as well as Jr. ROTC, Honor Unit Air Force, and an outdoor education program called Project Adventure. They also provide technology classes and AP (Advanced Placement) courses to help your child toward college.
